Up, Up, And Away!!!

I feel like I could fly to Mars and not need a spacesuit. Heck, I could probably do a Mercury-Pluto run without touching a gravity well. I’ve been accepted by SIAST into the New Media Communications programme, I managed to survive being out for two hours by myself and only had one cigarette in the process.

New Media Communications covers a lot of ground, both in terms of design and presentation media. About 1/3 of the course can be used for web design and the rest is basic design principles and assorted human resources courses, job skills, resume writing and so on.

There’s a second year to the programme and that will cover both advanced web design techniques and programming, as well as other media – kiosks, CDs, DVDs etc. I’m looking at taking that, as well. With luck, my agoraphobia will be well enough under control that I won’t have to worry about that aspect of things.

One of the pluses to taking this programme is that I don’t necessarily have to “be at work” to “be at work”. Being a webmaster/mistress can be a telecommuting job, something that I’m going to be looking into. If all else fails, I can always move to another city. I don’t want to have to do that, but it’s an option I can’t dismiss out of hand.

Another plus to the programme is that I may be able to get a grant to pick up a new computer and equipment. With luck, I’ll be able to pick up a digital camera, as well as a new scanner. It all depends on the requirements of the grant. The way I see it, if I get top of the line (or as close as I can get within reason) equipment now, it won’t be outdated in my second year and I’ll have a few years grace before I have to upgrade again. I bought my G4 six years ago and it’s already outdated. I’d like to get that much use (or more) out of the new computer.

The main two requirements I’m going to need for school are the option of using a walkman during class (or transfer my tapes to CD, part of the programme cirriculum anyway) or having the use of a computer and headset so that I can focus on my work and not on what’s going on around me.

Nick has seen my website and thinks well of it. He asked about this blog and nodded when I said I was using WordPress. It’s a simple thing to configure. It has to be. I don’t know that much about programming and I managed to get it looking the way it should. I’m thinking of getting a new site started, blog-run, but this time I’m going to alter the PHP of the page to get it looking the way I want it to. I’ll try adding a new template to the site, there are plenty of those around, but if all else fails, I’ll adjust the PHP. I may have to add a new section to it because I want a third column.

I’m also going to seriously sit down and look at that “Mastering Javascript” text I have. I’ve done a fair bit in it, marking off things that I know I’ll need, but I didn’t do any of the exercises and I didn’t write my notes out. I’ll have to do that before I continue further in the book. I can write my notes up in here or on the new site and hopefully the repetition will help me get my head around the concepts and grammar.
