Power Supplies and Batteries

If your computer doesn’t want to turn on properly, I’ve discovered, it’s not necesssarily because you need a new power supply.

I checked all the manuals that I could find and none of them give a detailed troubleshooting guide for power. There’s nothing that says “check the battery first”, probably because that’s only a $15 fix, rather than the $150 needed for a power supply and the installation of same. That’s what happened the last time my computer didn’t want to work properly.

I can’t say as I’m impressed with the technicians/shop that I took the computer to. “It’s a Mac so the fix must be expensive” is a poor excuse, to my way of thinking. The closest repair shop for my Mac is in Saskatoon. There’s two of them there, one a shop that deals with both Macs and PCs and the university. Of the two, I’ll be keeping the university address and phone number handy. I don’t mind students working on my computer. At worst, I can remove a couple of the hard drives from the computer and ship it down with only the bare bones on it. I have three hard drives and they all have system folders on them, just in case one HD dies.

I’ve discovered that removing the HD in my Mac isn’t that hard. Four screws at most. I’m tempted to see if I can pick up another hard drive, though. I need just a tad more than 4Gb SCSI to run Windows98 and VirtualPC. I like the idea of having my windows information on a single drive, one that’s fairly simple to remove, because then I don’t need to take the entire computer to the shop if Windows dies on me. I can just take the hard drive and run it down. Much easier on the bus. The G4 tower weighs a few pounds.

With luck, I’ll have a battery that fits some time this weekend and I can go back to using *my* computer. I miss playing backgammon.

Well, so much for that idea. I think the computer will have to go into the shop. Changing the battery didn’t help any.

I picked up a battery in Saskatoon a while ago, yes. But replacing the battery didn’t get the computer working. I had originally thought it was the power supply, but the guy from the shop suggested changing the battery first.
