Summer In The City

Well, it looks like we’re getting summer, although you wouldn’t know it from the basement temperature. It’s about 22C (and climbing) outside, but the basement is several degrees cooler. I’ve got an afghan around my knees, a knitted poncho on and a lapful of kittens and we’re all trying to keep warm as we type.

The young lady who lives next door has come over for a visit with the kittens. She thinks it’s no end fun to carry the kittens around, but I’m not sure the kittens agree with her. She’s not rough with them, thankfully. She just likes to hold the cats and kittens. Smoky objects to the little girl holding her. If she were a few inches taller, Smoky probably wouldn’t mind nearly as much. At least her back legs would clear the ground.

Two of the kittens have discovered the top of the basement stairs. They followed Smoky up last night, which worried Smoky no end. I’m not sure if she carried the kittens down again or if they went back downstairs under their own steam.

Sari’s kittens, too, have discovered the delights outside their nest. They’re in the bottom of the linen closet now, instead of in Mem’s room. They’re not quite steady on their feet, but as they’re only a month old, I don’t expect much else of them. I found one in my room when I woke up yesterday. Good thing I heard the squeaking before I put both feet on the floor.

This house is much cooler than the old one. Last year at this outside temperature it was several degrees *hotter* in the house. Not my idea of fun. Even the upstairs isn’t all that hot yet. Maybe the move wasn’t such a bad thing after all.
